It can be hard when families live far apart. Special occasions bring the distance to the forefront and present a special challenge for those trying to build bonds with young children. One positive thing that has come from living through a pandemic has been that many more people are comfortable or have at least used virtual meeting spaces and are now familiar with how to operate them. There are several platforms you can set up a virtual meeting so family members will have an opportunity to check in and see each other, even at a distance.

Games to Play
Engaging people in games, especially little ones, can be hard! It depends on your attendees and family interests what will work best for your meeting. Here are a few ideas to get your creative juices flowing:

With toddlers and very young children, meetings can be a bomb if they last more than five (or maybe two) minutes. We have found that little ones love seeing pictures and short video clips of family members or friends doing something fun, singing a song, or just waving "hi". This alternative also allows family and friends to make videos or photos at a time that is most convenient for them, then send it for others to view when works best for them too.
For one fourth birthday party, we asked family and friends to make cupcakes and send a short video or photo of them enjoying them for our daughter's birthday. It gave people an excuse to make (or purchase) delicious cupcakes, and connected everyone on her birthday. If you are feeling particularly ambitious, you could even send the cupcake or other dessert kit to your "attendees"! You could make use of Amazon, to make things especially easy.
